The Drum & Bass Thread (formally Drum 'n' Bass is dead?)
The Drum & Bass Thread (formally Drum 'n' Bass is dead?) Posted on: 19.08.2008 by Random X Every now and than, a musical genres foremost poet or pioneer will come forth claiming the style is dead. We've already seen it in punk, hip hop, metal, rock and opera already. Stupidest thing even, that this seems to be some kind of "retro- cycle" that passes along every decade. With the coming of styles like dubstep amongst others, purists are really keen on claiming that these styles are no derative or subgenre of our beloved DnB. Better yet, they utter the words "DnB is dead!" If your own creative impulses can't cope with a style any longer, why claim it is dead in the first place? Couldn't it just evolve into other (sub)styles? No, kill your idols instead! There seems to be no better way to start something new, than completely destroy any relations with the past. How can a genre with high BPM rates be dead, while comparing it to the ever so low BPM rates of the ever so vivid dubstep? Ofcourse, BPM rates are not a factor in this case, but people listening and enjoying DnB are. There are still heaps and heaps of bass-heads still jumping their shoes to the sounds of d&b pioneers as Krush, Bukem, Dom & Roland and all others still producing. Agreed that the old spirit needs to be revived. Still, it's no reason to don the old lass after that much joy she has given us. Drum and Bass is dead? It seems ever so vibrant as it was in 1996! | |
Belen Wermes 09.02.2010 | so friends, what's new and interesting in dnb for 2010??? |
Random X 31.01.2010 | Damn, 2 weeks without a post.... Can it really be? |
Tianna Laguerre 17.01.2010 | so... been scouting 1/2step a bit.. made some playlists, merged them up with my "deep" tunes and voila: when i watched Blu Mar Ten play out i noticed that at least one third of tunes he had played was my regulars... i was sooo happy. The set was mixture of 2-3 deep tunes (Data, Spectrasoul, break, and the likes) and then 2-3 1/2step tunes (did not recognize much, though), rinse and repeat XD, altogether it felt like they had been scouting my playlist for past two months (excluding 1/2step stuff obv), haha. |
Random X 12.01.2010 | urgh another have to listen on my list. |
Adolf Hit 11.01.2010 | Heh I happen to be listening to the Autonomic Podcast right now Tis good! |

So thx again |
Gilda Bousfield 11.01.2010 | Also check out Blu mar ten's album. Really nice "half step" tunes on that. Any thing on non plus/darkestral is good. Rockwell is the one to watch this year. Dbridge/intrumental have a fabric live cd coming out soon....looks good |
Ryan Morales 11.01.2010 | Also Phat10 was fucking MAD! Best gig ever. kthxbai. |

In terms of that sound theres dBridge, Instra:Mental, ASC & a New Zealand producer called Consequence who is siiic, but also releases from Scuba, Skream & other dubstep guys stepping up bpms. The Upbeats have a few tunes in this vibe as well, Bones is doooope! http://www.club-autonomic.com/ http://www.myspace.com/consequencenz http://www.myspace.com/theupbeatsnz In terms of the heavier stuff Amit has been doing it for years, but theres also the likes of Donny (On the Gash/Darkcore tip) & Randomer (Heavier tech stz) who rep the halfstep. Theres other as well I just forget thier names. |

Gilda Bousfield 08.01.2010 | Ok sorry the E word got droped, but I'm sure the NZ guys will agree with the Upbeats album, the Alix P album, the Blu Mar Ten album ect. It is fair to say that there has never been a year with this much variaty and different sounds. |
Random X 08.01.2010 | Easy on the E there, son! But to be honest, I do believe 2009 was a good year for DnB. Even though the releases were not that heavy, myself and I know quite some other D&B- addicts were swaying to other genres to fill our tunage-need, the genre came to realise that it needs to fall back to the roots. There are certain rising new elements, and also some veterans who are picking up yee olde guantlets to once again lift the mighty tanckard to sound in the tunes of the new era of Drum & Bass. |

PS DNB is not dead if anything it has just started again, after a few years of terrible jump up it now has found its soul again. 2009 was in my opinion the best year for dnb therefore proving it still is growin, evolving and has more to give. Bring on 2010! |

Hannes Deburchgraeve 07.01.2010 | Wow. I can't believe it's almost been a year and a half since this thread started. Good thing I've been following it intensely since it started, so I'll summarize and safely conclude that Drum and Bass is in fact dead. The proof is in the pudding. DnB is now popular in some parts of Australia and New Zealand. Just ask Bento or Midi Fiddler to confirm this. And as we all know things become popular in Australia and New Zealand long after they've lost relevance and respect in other countries. So, dnb, it was nice to meet you. Better luck coming back as Dub Step. |
Latoria Kavulich 07.01.2010 | and so he should lmao! |
Gilda Bousfield 07.01.2010 | Nice! My worst ever moment was when I went up to Goldie off my nut and basically told him I loved him. To which he looked me up and down and told me to fuck off. Lol |
Monet Yucel 05.01.2010 | Oh and there's nothing funnier than the look on a security guards face when your holding up our pass to get backstage not realising that on your twisted rinse through the dancefloor your pass broke off your lanyard and theres nothing their. Hahahahaaha |
Monet Yucel 05.01.2010 | PHAT 10: BSE slammed it and Spor absolutely slammed it, Pendulum sucked right down to their matching jackets, one of my chick friends went home with maldini from Bad Company, TuTu from Cuba is a douche, Louie from the roast crew pulled a chick from the front of the stage whilst he was back stage, just pretty much did the point manouveur, Hype showed that yes he is human and even pro DJ's make mistakes by trainsmashing two tunes quite epically, wicked set by him none the less, and for the people flying over the campsite in microlites when I was trying to sleep after a very hard rinse, fuck you microlites are gay!!!! All in all phat was grand although I'm still paying for it, Ohhh and at one stage I lost the feeling in my hands for three or so hours, quite funny really, couldn't roll ciggies, or hold onto drinks, I can't quite remember what part of the nite I thought it was a good idea to consume all of my stash but hey it was my 10yr celebration of falling in love with the DnB sound, thanks Konflict for showing me the light back at Gathering 2000 |

Everything else was awesome - Organikizmess into The Upbeats into Dj HYPE into Bad Company into Spor into Truth was my highlight |

Virginia Ortiz 04.01.2010 | phat 10 i saw... optimus grime markie bad company spor black sun empire dj hype benga skream truth concord dawn the upbeats state of mind bulletproof habit nanoteck and a bunch of others i can't remember right now. my brain is tired from doin drugs for 7 days in a row lol. the only act who sucked were pendulum (dj set) who never got a single mix right. first time i'd seen them too and they blew it lol |
Carletta Witwicki 01.01.2010 | Let me start by saying I LOVE Drum n Bass. I started listening to jungle back in the mid to late 90s when I was in high school. I watched it evolve into what it is today. With that said, the creativity in DNB has been absent for quite some time. It happens with any genre though. It seems like electronic music has a certain thing about it, where a couple people come up with something clever during the same time frame, and it gets beaten to death by everybody that follows. Subgenres evolve<?> out of those ideas. Hell! record labels start from those ideas. In the end what you're left with are faceless productions. I can understand how people might resign themselves to a certain subgenre of dnb, but to believe you're contributing to the genre by simply adding more of the same to what desperately needs innovation seems a bit pointless. I feel like the only evolution drum and bass has seen in the past decade has only been the evolution of the tools being used, not the evolution of ideas by the producers using those tools. There are of course exceptions, but I feel like that playful spirit of yore where producers took chances are no longer here in regards to drum and bass. The other thing I don't like is that much like hiphop, drum and bass is seen as a territorial accomplishment by those who have done something with it. Even people who pioneered drum and bass are too concerned with defending their territory to pass the torch onto new talent. The same people who created and defined it have killed it. I can understand people who enjoy dnb wanting to distance themselves from candy kids in the rave scene wanking off on trance. That's why we had our lil smoke filled rooms off to the side in those massive warehouses. We just need to be less arrogant towards others, especially people cut from the same cloth. Overall, there will always be a need for electronic music in the high bpms. It might not go K-S--KS- anymore, but we coulda used alot more clever ideas ages ago. Right now Dubstep is a breeding ground for creativity. I stress it when I say "RIGHT NOW". Dnb was in the same spot when it started asserting itself as a different animal from jungle awhile back. Dubstep will go the way of the dinosaur too, if it grabs the same nasty habits from dnb. |
Random X 01.01.2010 | Same here... Actually, a colleague from my fiancee went from here, Holland, to there, Phat10, to meet up with her friends and party. |
